Hours: 7am-3:30pm


JOB DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision of a Streets Worker III, an employee in this role performs entry level duties, including but not limited to, semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor tasks in the construction and/or maintenance and repair of streets and other facilities as assigned. As experience with the variety of departmental systems and practices is gained, duties become more diversified and performed under more general supervision.


EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Participates in a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in maintaining City streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way and drainage
  • Prepares forms and lays concrete to repair or replace sidewalks, storm drains, curb and gutter, or related structures, finish concrete
  • Fits drainage pipe together for construction or maintenance of storm sewer
  • Operates dump trucks to haul dirt, gravel and equipment
  • May operate backhoes to load materials or dig in locations that do not require significant skill
  • Participates in preparing asphalt material and patching
  • Lays, pours and finishes curbs, gutters and sidewalks
  • Lay brick and blocks
  • Operates power-driven and hand tools in packing asphalt, as well as, concrete cutting and breaking tools
  • Clean storms drains and catch basins
  • Place safety cones and signs around construction/work sites (may all flag traffic)
  • Operate pneumatic tools in repairing utility cut-ins
  • Performs related work and special projects as required

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED equivalent
  • Some experience in construction work including the operation of medium-sized motorized equipment

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Two years’ minimum experience in maintenance and construction type work including the operation of medium sized equipment

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of work practices associated with street maintenance and construction
  • Skill in use of hand tools and small power tools
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral instructions
  • Ability to work safely and cautiously while exposed to vehicular traffic
  • Ability to operate motorized vehicles and equipment in a safe manner
  • Ability to work with machinery and its moving parts, sharp tools and other vibrating equipment in a safe manner
  • Ability to occasionally lift objects of 50-100 pounds
  • Ability to work in inclement weather
  • Ability to work with fellow employees and the general public in a courteous and harmonious manner
  • Capability of performing the necessary functions of the job

Physical Demands

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment such as: walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach twist, grasp and make repetitive hand movement. The performance of daily duties may require climbing on ladders, operating assigned equipment and vehicles, lifting/carrying/pushing moderate to heavy amounts of weight and verbally communicate to exchange information. May be required to respond to emergency and public calls after hours, including evenings and weekends.


Work Environment

Work is usually performed in an outdoor field environment. This results in exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, hazardous traffic and all types of weather/temperature conditions. Work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as, rough terrain is common.
